I’m starting to feel ghosted by my own best friend.

Sitting alone in a garden just outside of Mulan’s village, a hot cup of green tea and dim sum before me, I seem to be the only one following the Happily Ever Island Friendship Tour that Madison spent so much time making. The tables around me are filled with friends and family members eating breakfast and chatting away about the adventures ahead, but all I can do is sip my drink and take in the beautiful surroundings, cherry blossom trees gently rustling in the light breeze. Today’s itinerary called for an early morning treat-up (a meet-up with treats) before our scheduled Disney activity for the day, but even though I pulled myself out of bed at sunrise to be here, Madison is once again nowhere to be found.

It’s starting to really annoy me. I mean, what is happening with her? She begged me to come here, and now she can’t be bothered to show up? Has she gotten so lost in make-believe that she’s forgotten about her best friend? Because that would be really unfair. Maybe I need to do something dramatic, some kind of gesture to snap her out of her daydreams. I could send in Prince Phillip for another rescue.…

Or maybe…Prince Charming?

Heat licks my neck and cheeks at the thought of our Sleeping Beauty escapade, the two of us running through the thorny brambles hand in hand, laughing hysterically. From up close, I could see tiny flecks of gold in his warm brown eyes, his lips so close I could—

“Damn girl, you have got to tell me what you’re thinking about right now.” Madison plops down in front of me, cutting my fantasy short. Her hair is pulled up in a high pony without a trace of Cinderella blue; in fact, she’s dressed all in black. Strange. “You look like you’re having some very dirty daydreams, and I want details.”

“Oh, look, you’re here,” I say sarcastically, tucking away my lustful thoughts. I do my best to reset my expression to neutral, but between being frustrated with her and caught up with Charming, it’s hard to find a chill place to land. “I didn’t think you were gonna make it.”

“What? Why wouldn’t I?” She looks genuinely surprised.

“Um, yesterday? The snorkeling? Which I did solo?”

She groans, leaning her head back. “I’m so sorry about that. Lady Tremaine is like a straight-up warden. She’s taking this role-play way, way too literally. This morning I had to scrub her underwear!”

I frown. That does not sound right. “Are you serious?”

“Yes!” She throws her arms out in exasperation. “Yesterday I had to pull together breakfast in some medieval-style kitchen. You know how I can’t cook; my only culinary success comes in liquid form.”

That is true. I once saw her burn a muffin in the toaster oven. I push a bowl toward her. “Sounds like you could use some mango pudding.”

She forces a smile. “I really, really could.” Madison sadly reaches for a spoon, but her first bite doesn’t seem to bring any joy.
